Jelani Eddington Inaugurates Grand Barton Theatre Organ
FITZGERALD, GEORGIA. On Saturday, March 26, 2011, Jelani Eddington performed the dedication concert of the 3-manual 18-rank Barton theatre pipe organ newly installed in the Grand Theatre in Fitzgerald, Georgia.
The instrument was previously owned by Dr. John Near of Galesburg, Illinois. The Near family donated the Barton organ to the theatre, and A. E. Schlueter organ builders reinstalled the instrument in the theatre, beginning in early 2010.
The dedication concert was attended by an enthusiastic, capacity audience of nearly 900. Highlights from the program included Medley From “The Phantom Of The Opera”, The Music Of James Bond, The Light Cavalry Overture, and The Grand Barton March–a work composed by theatre manager, Jon Durkovic, specifically for the new Barton Organ!
At present, the Grand Theatre’s instrument is the only Barton organ installed in the State of Georgia, and one of the few such instruments to reside outside the midwest USA. Plans are already underway to use the new instrument in a variety of programming and community events at the Grand Theatre.
